Luis Castillo shuts down Yankees in his Mariners debut

Luis Castillo, in his debut Wednesday for the Mariners less than 24 hours after MLB’s trade deadline, struck out eight over more than six innings in Seattle’s 7-3 victory over Gerrit Cole and the Yankees in New York.

The Mariners late last week traded a package of top prospects to the Reds for Castillo, a 29-year-old All-Star right-hander. It was a move meant to push the Mariners into contention in the American League. In his first start in a new league, Castillo is paying off.

He gave up three runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. The Yankees put up an early run against Castillo in the second inning when Andrew Benintendi walked and Isiah Kiner-Falefa singled him in. But through six innings, the Mariners held a 6-1 lead.

Castillo had thrown 95 pitches through those six innings but returned for the seventh. Yankees catcher Kyle Higashioka then hit a two-run homer with two outs and Castillo was removed after 106 pitches.

“He is in the prime of his career, performing at the top of his game,” Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said after trading for Castillo.

Eugenio Suarez, Carlos Santana and Jarred Kelenic all homered off Cole in a six-run first inning for Seattle. And Jesse Winker homered for the Mariners in the seventh. Cole struck out eight and walked just one, but gave up six runs on seven hits in his six innings.
